Name | Tim Kreger
Title | Executive Director, Carolinas GCSA
Hometown | Funny story. I actually remember calling my mother after my first day at the University of Kentucky and asking her what I was supposed to write down for “hometown.” I was an Army brat and she said, “Which ever town you liked the best.”
What’s a day in the life for you in your job? It depends. It’s usually all enjoyable, which is by choice. Each day is a new adventure, and I can’t say I’ve ever had two that were similar — monotony is never an option.
What should golf course superintendents know about your organization that they don’t already know? We do so much more than just provide educational opportunities for not only the superintendent profession but also the game of golf.
When you’re gone from the golf industry, how do you want to be remembered? Kind of like Midas with a golden touch, except in this manner, that everything I touched or acted upon was for making the game of golf better.
If you were born 100 years ago, what would you do for a living? I’d be a cowboy or a soldier.
Who is your hero? My father, a retired U.S. Army colonel.
What’s the best thing about the golf industry? The camaraderie.
What’s the worst thing about the golf industry? The internal politics and the resource challenges between all the varying professional organizations.
What golf course can’t you wait to get on and why? The next one I get to play — I just love to play. I’ve been blessed and able to play Augusta National Golf Club and the Old Course at St. Andrews. Just go play!
Describe golf course superintendents in one word? Comprehensive.
Who would you rather play golf with –– Arnie or Jack? Why? Arnie. I like to cut up and have fun when I play and it just seems Arnie would be more suited to that. If I was more competitive then definitely Jack, so I could learn how to take the left side of the course out of play.
If you were a super hero, who would you be and why? Batman. I just want to say “I’m Batman,” like Michael Keaton did in the movie.
What do you like to do away from your job? Other than wrestling with my two young children, turkey hunting and playing golf.
What is your all-time favorite song? “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor. It reminds me of going to see “Rocky III” with my father when I was really young, and it motivates and excites any crowd whenever played.
What’s your favorite movie and why? “Star Wars” series, particularly “The Empire Strike Back.” But very closely behind is “The Princess Bride.”
Speaking of movies, who’s your favorite character from “Caddyshack”? I’ve decided to block this movie from my current methodology since we are representing superintendents in a much better light these days. However, since asked… Carl.
