Executive Vice President/Redexim North America
Hometown: Wildwood, Mo. (St. Louis)
What should Superintendents know about your company?: Redexim is not a Dutch word as many have asked over the years. It is the combined first two letters of the following words; REsearch, DEvelopment, EXport, and IMport. Many of our employees aren’t even aware of the origin.
What do you do all day in your job? No two days are ever alike. We’re a small company, so everyone has to wear multiple hats and jump in as needed. One day I might be discussing production schedules, and then working on marketing plans, sales, budgets or product development the next.
When you’re gone from the golf industry, how do you want to be remembered? I would like to be remembered as someone who was fair and honest. Hopefully, I leave the industry better than when I found it.
Best thing about the golf industry: It has to be the people, without question. I don’t think any of us are getting rich doing this, but I place a lot of value in the relationships that I have made through the years.
Worst thing about the golf industry: Long hours and being dependent on the weather
What golf course can’t you wait to get on and why? I’m not much of a golfer, but I do enjoy visiting the top courses just to admire the scenery. I’ve heard there are courses in Africa, which combine golf with a wildlife safari. That’s something that would interest me.
Describe golf course superintendents in one word? Challenging.
If you have four hours to watch TV, what do you watch?“Seinfeld” never gets old. Lately my wife and I have gotten into watching the “Walking Dead” series on AMC.
What do you like to do away from your job? The most important thing to me is spending time with my family. I enjoy cooking, gardening, music, St. Louis Cardinals baseball and anything that keeps me outdoors.
Favorite movie and why: I love old westerns, and “Rio Bravo” is one that I watch over and over, but my all-time favorite movie is “It’s a Wonderful Life.” I love the message that it sends – that the everyday lives of ordinary people, who try to do the right thing by themselves and their neighbors, can touch others in countless ways.
Favorite “Caddyshack” character? I always laugh out loud at the Al Czervik character played by Rodney Dangerfield.
He’s just out there to have fun.
Who is your hero?If I had to pick one person, it would have to be “The Boss,” Bruce Springsteen. His music has been the soundtrack through the peaks and valleys of my life. I admire anyone that tries to make the world better for others.
Who would you rather play golf with – – Arnie or Jack?Arnie. He seems more like an average guy.
Beef, chicken or fish? I consider myself a bit of a “foodie,” so I would order according to the location. If I were on the coast, then I would order fish; if I was in the Midwest, then I would order a steak. I’m a Southern boy at heart, so I can never get enough fried chicken.
