Golf Industry Profile
Mike Koppen | Product Line Marketing Manager, Golf Products, John Deere Golf
Hometown: Dubuque, Iowa
What should Superintendents know about your company?: While many may know that John Deere is a very large company, they may not realize the benefit. We have the advantage of collaborating with all divisions within the enterprise to design world-class equipment that really helps our customers do their jobs.
What do you do all day in your job? I have the best job in the world. To put it simply, my group looks after all of our current golf products, defines unmet customer needs, and then works with product design to turn those unmet needs into future products.
When you’re gone from the golf industry, how do you want to be remembered? I want people to remember how I really enjoyed my job, and that I loved coming to work and contributed to the industry in some small way.
Who is your hero? My father, an honest, hard working, nice guy.
Best thing about the golf industry: I think it’s the professionalism that you see in all of the people involved in the golf maintenance industry.
Worst thing about the golf industry: I love the game of golf, so the worst thing is to be able to visit all these great courses and rarely have the time to play them.
What golf course can’t you wait to get on and why? I’ve had the opportunity to play some pretty nice courses around the world, and I suppose my bucket list is like most others as it includes courses like Augusta National and Pine Valley. However, as I tell my wife, I have never seen a golf course that I didn’t like.
If you were born 100 years ago, what would you do for a living? Work for John Deere, as we are that old of a company!
Describe golf course superintendents in one word? Artists.
What do you like to do away from your job? Play golf, exercise and work around my yard.
