As 2014 comes to a close, we are highlighting those who made an impact in the world of golf course maintenance this year. From having a “Tough Chin” to eating “Humble Pie” to “Seeing Into the Future,” these individuals stand out.
The “Tough Chin” Award goes to Tom Vlach, certified golf course superintendent at TPC Sawgrass. The Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, didn’t happen without a hitch last year. Five putting greens were in poor shape around tournament time, putting the course’s very capable superintendent in the limelight.
To make matters worse, The Golf Channel reported that the “five greens were negatively impacted by the misapplication of a product.” No superintendent wants his name attached to the word “misapplication” when it comes to chemicals.
The crummy greens weren’t Vlach’s fault and it was completely unfair to him and his crew for the PGA to say that a product was misplaced. Read the full story here to find out just what happened.
Here’s to Vlach for keeping his chin up.
