What’s a day in the life for you in your job? I’m responsible for hosting 34 groups of superintendents a year from around the country as part of the BASF/Pinehurst Experience. I also perform onsite research at the Pinehurst Turf Research Center.

What should golf course superintendents know about your organization that they don’t already know? BASF is the world’s largest chemical company and employs more than 114,000 individuals globally.

When you’re gone from the golf industry, how do you want to be remembered? I’d like to be remembered as someone who helped superintendents perform their jobs in a better way, and also as positive mentor to those individuals who worked for me when I was a superintendent.

If you were born 100 years ago, what would you do for a living? I would have loved to have been a pilot during the early aviation period.

What’s the best thing about the golf industry? The camaraderie among superintendents.

What’s the worst thing about the golf industry? Getting young golfers involved for the future of golf.

Who is your hero? All those serving in the armed forces and providing the freedom we have today.

What golf course can’t you wait to get on and why? St. Andrews — to see where Donald Ross began his career.

Describe golf course superintendents in one word? Passionate.

Who would you rather play golf with –– Arnie or Jack? Why? Jack. He was someone I looked up to at a young age when I started golf.

If you were a super hero, who would you be and why? The Incredible Hulk. I love watching him take control during the “Avengers” movies

What do you like to do away from your job? Spend time at the beach with the family.

What is your all-time favorite song? Any ’80s music, but I used to play “When Will It Rain” by Jackyl during a major drought in 2010.

What’s your favorite movie and why? “Top Gun.” I always had a passion for flying planes. I actually started my college career path in aviation school at Purdue University.


Speaking of movies, who’s your favorite character from “Caddyshack”? Ty Webb, played by Chevy Chase. I thought he had some great one-liners in the movie.
