The board will also advise on story ideas, review content, and participate as sources in stories and in roundtable discussions. “The nine members of our board have at least one thing in common – they are all very passionate about what they do for a living,” Aylward said. “We’re thankful for our association with them.” The nine members represent an array of levels in the profession, Aylward said. “That’s vital, because we want our brand to represent all superintendents.”
Here are the nine members:
Chris Dalhamer is the certified golf course superintendent at Pebble Beach Golf Links, a position he has held for five years. Dalhamer was the superintendent at Spyglass Hill Golf Course at Pebble Beach Resorts for three years prior to coming to Pebble Beach. Dalhamer hosted the U.S. Open in 2010. He has a bachelor’s degree in business management and a minor in plant science from Chico State University.
Dalhamer also holds an associate’s degree in ornamental horticulture from Monterey Peninsula College.
Craig Felton is the golf course superintendent at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas. In his 20-year span as a superintendent, the Ohio native and Ohio State University graduate has worked at private clubs throughout the South including the Onion Creek Club and Falconhead Golf Club in Austin, Texas; New Orleans (La.) Country Club; and Riverchase Country Club in Birmingham, Ala. Oak Hills, designed by A.W. Tillinghast and founded in 1922, is steeped in history. It has hosted 24 PGA Tour events, including the inaugural Tour Championship in 1987. It has been home of the Champions Tour AT&T Championship since 2002.
Michael P. Osley is the certified golf course superintendent at Meadow Hills Golf Course in Aurora, Colo. Osley has been a superintendent for 19 years and has spent 29 years in the field. He has an associate’s degree in the science of golf course operations from Lake City Community College. Osley is also past president of the Rocky Mountain GCSA. He has served on various boards and committees on local and national levels.
Certified superintendent Ken Mangum is the director of golf courses and grounds at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga. Mangum, who has been at the club since 1988, oversees a staff of 75 people who manage two 18-hole golf courses, a nine-hole par-3 course, and roughly 500 acres of club real estate. Mangum has an associate’s degree in golf course operations from Lake City Community College. Mangum, who was the Georgia Superintendent of the Year in 2002, will host the PGA Championship in August. He also hosted the tournament in 2001.
Kevin Smith is the vice president and director of agronomy for Greensboro, N.C. based Pinnacle Golf Properties. Smith, who studied at Michigan State University, landed his first superintendent job at Amarillo (Texas) Country Club in 1986. He was also superintendent at Troon Golf & Country Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., and for the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama. He is past president of the Cactus & Pine GCSA.
Todd Voss is director of golf course maintenance at the Double Eagle Golf Club in Galena, Ohio. The son of a superintendent, Voss grew up in the industry working for his dad, Joe Voss. Voss attended Penn State University, where he earned a two-year certificate in the turfgrass management program. After graduation, Voss worked as assistant superintendent at Double Eagle Club for three years. In 1994, he accepted the position as grow-in superintendent at Fox Meadow Country Club in Medina, Ohio. He returned to Double Eagle in 1996 for his current position. Voss has served on many committees and boards, including the United States Golf Association’s Greens Section Committee and the Ohio Turfgrass Foundation.
Marc Shotzberger is superintendent of the Philmont Country Club in Huntingdon Valley, Pa. Shotzberger has worked as a superintendent and an assistant superintendent for more than 20 years in the East and Midwest. He has a two-year certificate in the turfgrass management from Penn State University in 1989.
