NAME | Jim Letourneau
TITLE | President/COO, Foley United
HOMETOWN | Hudson, Wisconsin

What’s a day in the life for you in your job? Up at 5 a.m. and in the office by 7:30, leaving the shop at roughly 5:30 p.m. I travel an average of one trip a month, generally to support the distributors or sales people. My day can run the entire gambit dealing with manufacturing, engineering, sales, marketing and human resources on any given day. That’s what keeps it interesting.

What should golf course superintendents know about your company that they don’t already know? Foley United is a division of Foley-Belsaw, which has been in the business of building sharpening machines since 1926, reel-sharpening equipment since 1934, and introduced the Accu-Master, bringing automated reel grinding to the golf industry in 1994.

When you’re gone from the golf industry, how do you want to be remembered? As the team leader of the people who designed and produced the best reel grinders in the industry, of superb quality and unparalleled innovation.

If you were born 100 years ago, what would you do for a living? Blacksmithing

Who is your hero? John Glenn

What’s the best thing about the golf industry? It’s a small industry filled with high-quality people.

What’s the worst thing about the golf industry? The growth rate of golf is not what it once was. It’s difficult to watch courses close. What golf course can’t you wait to get on and why? I’ve been on many top courses and always enjoy the opportunity to tour a course, no matter what or where it is.

Describe golf course superintendents in one word? It’s not possible. Superintendents have a mix of skills that is difficult to express in multiple paragraphs, let alone one word. I would use words like great managers, planners, business people, trainers, and they possess a wealth of knowledge on a large list of topics.

If you were a super hero, who would you be and why? Superman. You would never have to guess what is happening behind the wall or in another part of the world. Being able to fly and having X-ray vision would be great. Helping others to do good deeds would be awesome.

What do you like to do away from your job? My favorite hobby is flying and working on small old airplanes. I’m restoring a 1948 Luscombe at the moment. I also enjoy fishing and motorcycling.

What is your all-time favorite song? “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong.

What’s your favorite movie and why? There are too many great movies to pick a favorite.

Speaking of movies, who’s your favorite character from “Caddyshack” and why? Danny Noonan – he never lost sight of his goal.
