Golf and the Environment Team Up for Tournament

1/23/2012

The Allianz Championship, an official PGA Champions tournament in Boca Raton, Fla., played at The Old Course at Broken Sound Golf Club, is partnering with the International Green Energy Council (IGEC) with a mission to become one of the greenest golf tournaments in North America. To achieve this goal, the tournament will also collaborate with The Smart Group, an organization of ecologists, scientists, educators, and academic researchers who help clients make sound decisions about environmental management.

The tournament is held annually and this year will be played on Feb. 6 through 12. Broken Sound Club is the first facility in Florida and only the second in the country to be GEO-Certified, which is a prestigious title awarded to golf courses for their exceptional sustainable efforts.
The Allianz Championship has set these new green benchmarks in the 2012 tournament:
  •  tournament powered by 100 percent renewable energy;
  •  develop a comprehensive carbon footprint analysis;
  •  implement a zero-waste program; and
  •  educate spectators, players and vendors about the benefits of going green in their daily business and personal lives.
The entire tournament site will be promoted as a "Green Zone" comprised of different vendors with the goal of spreading new green ideas and educating the public.
